Matthew has no idea how to use a phone, but leave voice/text messages for him here.

He'd promised Raven he would find others. She doesn't really admit anything aloud, but Matthew gets the idea that she's disappointed in the emptiness of the school so far. He'd be lying if he said he didn't wish the same. Darrow School for the Gifted is the closest tie he's found to home so far since being in this city, and he wants to do more. Back home he'd played this same role, sending his mind out through the Land and locating Misfits, bringing them back to Obernewtyn where they could be safe, where they could learn. He knows Raven wants the same for this place, and he intends to help make it happen.

The first thing, is finding students. There's no Zebrakahn machine here to extend his powers, but the city isn't as big as the Land, and he doesn't think he'll need it. There's no Blacklands either, nothing to stop him until he hits the city limits, where things start to become static. It's relaxing almost, being able to sit and let his mind free. He's spent so much of his time in Darrow keeping his Talents under wrap, not allowing himself to farseek anybody. Even Matthias and Dutch he holds back from, each for different reasons. Matthias is still a little uncomfortable with it, despite everything, and Matthew knows that Dutch hides secrets in her head that she doesn't want anybody knowing, not even him. But he hasn't been trapped in his own head like this since Redport, and it's suffocating.

Matthew sits on the steps of the school, the cold breeze brushing across his face and through his hair. He shuts his eyes, lets the school drop away from him, and sends his mind flying. At first it's a rush, feeling the city like this, letting his mind dip and dive around corners and through streets. For the most part things are quiet, nonTalents wandering the streets, going about their days. There's the occasional flicker of something, the hint of a Talent. Some are people he knows already, some are minds with Talents he doesn't recognise at all. He knows that Darrow has a far more varied type of abilities than he ever encountered back home, but it's still interesting to feel them for himself.

Eventually, he stumbles across a mind that gives him pause. She's not far away, and her mind feels like Cameo, almost. Before Alexi tore her mind to pieces. Her Talent hasn't been shaped, not in the way his has, and he finds himself standing up and moving forward almost unconsciously. Something about her triggers his curiosity, and he doesn't know if it's because her abilities remind him of Cameo or if it's just because he's always interested by others like him, but he's moving anyway.

"Hello?" he sends, not sure whether or not she'll have the power to talk back to him. It doesn't seem to matter, either way. He has a pinpoint on her mental signature, and he can find her physically, even if she can't respond mentally.

It's not often that Matthew takes the train, but he'd been curious. He still wants to learn to drive a car, though he doesn't know who would teach him and it would probably end in disaster. He'd almost been run down by one when he first arrived, and though he's learned how to take a cab, he still prefers to walk or ride one of the horses. Cars are a far cry from the gypsy carts they'd sometimes travelled in back home, and Matthew had always disliked those, too. He prefers to be on his own two feet. Still, he can't help but be curious, and any chance to see more of the Beforetime technology is something he welcomes.

He has nowhere in particular to go, but he has a day off from work so he decides he'll ride the train for the sake of it. It's early when he leaves, wanting to catch it before the hustle of people going about the city. There are always a few lined up to take the train just to see if it will take them back home, though Matthew knows it never will.

The train pulls onto the platform as Matthew arrives, his hands stuffed in his pockets. The city is quiet at this time of morning and it's nice, not having to concentrate on his shields so much. He can let his mind feel a little looser without worrying about hearing too much, and the air is cold and refreshing on his face. He boards the train with no destination in mind. He'll ride it while the mood takes him, and maybe later he'll go and tell Matthias about it. When he steps into the first compartment he's surprised to feel a presence nearby, knocking at the edge of his mind. He hadn't expected anyone else to be around yet, but he follows the trace until he finds a man in a business suit asleep on one the seats.

The door slams shut behind him before he can stop it and he grimaces. It was sure to wake the man up. "Sorry," he whispers, sliding into the seat across the aisle, embarrassed.

It's almost a perfect day. The sun is out but not too hot, the sky clear. Matthew loves the snow and the cold and it reminds him of home, but he cannot deny that a day like this is a welcome sight. It's been a trying few weeks but Matthew is determined to be in a good mood today. Recent times have seen his friends hurt in more ways than one, some more disturbing than others. The picture of Matthias on the ground screaming while he imagined Matthew being burned is still vivid in his mind, but he does his best to push it away. It's unsettled him since he saw it, but this is not a day for that kind of thinking.

Instead, Matthew rises and goes to work early. He's not due for another few hours yet, but he likes to spend some time with the horses before he needs to get to work proper. He's still trying to edge his way back into Bramble's good graces after he was thrown a week ago, and his leg is still not thanking him for it. The limp may be a little more pronounced but Matthew pays it no mind, saddling up and leading Bramble out into the training ring.

"Don't go throwin' me today," Matthew asks gently, signing the words one-handed as they walk. It's a habit he still hasn't dropped, despite knowing that the horses can't understand him. "My leg won't thank ye for it and neither will I."

With a little bit of stiffness, Matthew mounts up, patting the side of Bramble's neck and starting to lead him in a walk. Better to start slow, get the feel for each other again. It's not so often that he gets to ride the horses instead of mucking out their stables, so these are the hours that he lives for, before the rest of the city wakes up and he can spend some time alone with the animals. It's as close to home as he gets, Matthew thinks, in a city that is so far removed from anything he remembers.

Matthew hasn't seen Matthias all week. It's unusual, normally they would have hung out by now, or met up to train Annika, or something, but all there's been is radio silence. Matthew tries not to let it bother him. He knows that his friend and Dutch are newly together and that they must be taking up a lot of each other's time, and he's sure Matthias has many other friends in Darrow, too. So, he busies himself with work at the stables and visiting any parts of the city he hasn't seen yet.

His wandering makes it easy to notice the words written across everyone's backs, though it takes a few before Matthew catches on to the pattern. A quick check in the window of a shop says there's nothing written on his, which he's grateful for. Matthew doesn't know what kind of secret this city would try and put on his back anyway - something about Redport? The stories behind his scars, his limp? He doesn't think it's important enough. Maybe Dragon, his tie to the secret queen? That's not his secret to tell. If he were back home, he thinks, he knows he'd have Misfit emblazoned across his back like a brand, but that's not so much a secret, here. People here understand him, some are even like him, and so far no one has tried to burn him for it.

It occurs to him that he doesn't know all that much about Matthias's history, about the things he might not want people to know. Matthew doesn't think Matthias would want to share it with him necessarily, but it does maybe explain where he is. Regardless, he thinks, he should go and check that his friend is okay, so he changes direction and makes his way to Candlewood.

Matthew gets to The Bean Counter around 1 in the afternoon. Before he goes inside, he sends out a quick probe but the place seems relatively quiet. When he enters, he's immediately struck by the haphazard furnishings. It's endearing, the way none of the colours or styles match. It reminds him a little of the gypsy caravans from home, all eclectic colour and none of the boring drabness of Sutrium.

He finds himself a chair in the corner of the shop and sits down, waiting until Rapunzel arrives before he orders. She'd mentioned hot chocolate and he does want to try it, but he doesn't want to order the wrong thing, especially when he has no idea what he's getting himself into. So, he waits patiently, drumming his fingertips on the table.

He hasn't seen Rapunzel since they'd arranged to meet here for coffee, and he's a little apprehensive. Her appearance is still unsettling, and he keeps having to resist pushing his mind towards her, just to see whether she harbours any Talent. She's not Cameo, he knows that, but some part of him can't help but want to befriend and protect her. She seems young and innocent and full of life, all of the things Cameo had been before Alexi and Vega had robbed her of them. He doesn't know if there's anyone like that in Darrow, but he's definitely not going to let anybody hurt Rapunzel if he can help it.
